Eastern North Carolina plays a major role in the state’s economic development

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – Businesses are working hard throughout the pandemic. Today, a local organization is taking stock of a year of economic development.

Many bright spots came out of 2021 in terms of economic development not just in the state but in eastern North Carolina in particular. North Carolina saw about 23,000 jobs and $ 10 billion in capital investment in 2021 alone.

Professionals in the community also attribute some of this success to our state’s leaders, saying they’ve helped make North Carolina more conducive for business.

Today, Brad Hufford, vice president of business development for the Greenville ENC Alliance, says ENC is proving to be a major player in the game for the state and its economic development.

“We have the workforce they are looking for, we have sites that they would be interested in, that are fully serviced by the infrastructure and our location,” Hufford said. “So we have a great location on top of that, we have East Carolina University, with all the 30,000 students there, we have one of the top 10 community colleges in our community, and we just have huge care resources. health care now with ECU Health. “

Hufford says Thermo fisher bringing $ 654 million in investment and 790 jobs to the Greenville site specifically in the months of 2020 and 2021 is a major help in putting this area on the map. He also said that the ENC Alliance is excited for this year as it has many proposals and plans to implement for our region.

With the arrival of large companies in Greenville and its townships, it helps to measure up against Charlotte, the triangle, the triad and other major areas of the state.

He notes that Greenville sits perfectly between a big city like Raleigh and the beach, which makes it super marketable.
