Shimla, July 11
The state’s urban women’s self-help groups (SHGs) had the highest online sales of their products on Amazon and Flipkart among SHGs across the country in the past year. “Our SHGs have done business worth Rs 4.40 lakh, the highest among SHGs across the country,” said Rakhee Singh, Joint
Director, Department of Urban Development.
According to the report of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, the second place was won by SHGs from Kerala who did business worth Rs 1.98 lakh in the same span of time.
The Department of Urban Development has made these products available on
e-commerce portals to provide these SHGs with a larger and steady market.
“The department organizes exhibitions, fairs and special parties to help these SHGs sell their products. However, the online presence offers these SHGs a larger and unexplored market. The initiative will go a long way towards ensuring the socio-economic empowerment of these women,” said Rakhee Singh.
Sold under the brand “SonChiraiya”, the most searched products on e-commerce portals are Kullu caps, Kullu shawls, Kullu socks, Chamba sandals, Chamba plates, etc. “Products made by SHG Kullu and Chamba are the most sought after right now,” said Kamlesh Thakur, State Mission Manager, National Urban Livelihood Mission.
Knowing that their products are being sold online and are loved by customers across the country is very satisfying for the women involved in these SHGs. “We had no idea about Amazon, Flipkart until our products were put on these platforms six months ago. It’s very encouraging to know that people love our products,” said Leela Devi, Nai Kiran SHG Member, Kullu “Now we have to keep the stock ready all the time. Online orders can come anytime. Sales have increased and so has our income,” said Leela Devi.
For Reena, a member of Bera Wali Mata SHG from Chamba, the biggest benefit of going online is the ability to show and sell their products across the country and possibly overseas as well. “We hope our sales will increase much more in the coming times. With feedback from a much wider customer base, we will get new ideas to further improve our product,” Reena said.
The department, too, is very excited about the initial results. “At the moment, we only have a fraction of SHGs involved in crafts related to e-commerce portals. Given the good response to our products, there is a plan to bring food products to these portals as well. said Kamlesh Kumar.
