Nevada Department of Health and Human Services Director Richard Whitley announced that Robert Thompson has been named administrator of the Social and Support Services Division.

Steve Fisher, who served as a director since 2014, is retiring after 24 years of service.


During Fisher’s time with DWSS, he was part of many improvements aimed at improving the division’s ability to effectively provide services to Nevada citizens during times of crisis, economic downturn and pandemic.

Thompson has worked for DWSS for 22 years and has held many positions. He has been part of the DWSS leadership team since 2011 and was promoted to Deputy Administrator in 2018. He has been responsible for policy and program administration for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Family Assistance needy, Medicaid, energy assistance program, employment and training programs and SNAP Nutrition-Ed and outreach programs.
